Evaluation of Semester A

The first semester for Design was fantastic and challenging in places. I feel as though I’ve come away with a lot more technical know how regarding software, I’m also getting better at critically reviewing my own work, I feel as though reviewing my work and constantly arguing with whether it can be improved helps me to progress as a designer.

Typography –

The Typography brief was the one that I personally preferred. I got to use new software I was unfamiliar with and create a functional typeface. During the early weeks of the semester it took a great deal of time and effort to get the results I wanted, however in the end everything worked out well.

Final4

The image above is my final typeface, heavily inspired by Valyrian from Game of Thrones. It took a few iterations to get my letter forms to a standard I was happy with, but working meticulously in order to create a realistic font is something that I’m happy with.
For the practical usage my font found it’s place on a T-Shirt and Scroll, overall I feel as though the font can be quite versatile even for products you wouldn’t expect.

InfoGraphic –

The infographic brief was something that personally took me a bit longer to adapt to. Understanding the direction I wanted to take for the infographic was a big deal  for me, I wanted it to be light-hearted, professional and informative at the same time. It was only until I had done some research and looked at other examples that I began to get an overall feel for the content I wanted to make. I started the brief with an A2 poster and eventually worked to create the other outputs when I knew the direction I wanted to take with it.

The focus for me next semester is to get to grips with the content quicker, and evaluate my work better throughout the process of creation.

Workshop 12 – Finalised Infographic Layouts

During the final week before submission I created my final output formats for my Einstein brief. This included the Mobile application and a mock up website.

Final9

T
his image is my final rendition of the A2 poster, I’ve made slight tweaks to the information and I’ve also changed the standards graphic of Einstein and I’ve put him into a circle, this mirrors the running theme I have with Ovals and circular shapes and overall sits a lot better on the page than it did prior.

These two images are the mobile app, for the application I wanted something light-hearted and fun, although it looks quite separate and out of place in comparison to the A2 poster I feel as though the Application works better as a standalone piece. The application however also goes well with the website created to support the other formats.

The final output is the Website. Although there isn’t much development on the side of the application and website I feel as thought it came out at the best standard I could’ve hoped for, making the need for further iterations somewhat redundant. Overall I’m happy with how there’s an overall theme with: Colour, graphics and overall presentation. I feel as though the running theme with the blue complimenting the orange works extremely well.

Workshop 11 – Presentation of Finalised Ideas

During week 11 there was an assessed presentation on my final design and intended outputs for typography. The Einstein brief was also assessed.

For this I created a Pdf from an indesign file and presented my near finished design product.

In this presentation I’ve shown my research from prior and the development of my ideas towards final hand in standards, at this point the only outputs that are missing are my website and my Mobile applications.

Workshop 9 – Near Completion of A2 Poster

During week 9 I went back to the Einstein brief, I made further iterations on the overall design of my poster and eventually came to a near final product.

I decided to start from scratch with my A2 poster and go for a theme which had some overall flow to it. After researching the information on Einstein’s wormhole theory I had a general idea of the audience I wanted to aim my design at along with the supporting graphics I wanted to create.

For my audience I set out to create something informative for younger teenagers, children who are potentially leaving primary school and heading to secondary. I’m also slowly starting to piece together a colour theme, for this I used to website called http://www.paletton.com this gave me reassurance with the colours I was using.

My second iteration of the one above just expanded on the usage of vectors and the created more of a solid colour theme with the usage of Blues and Orange.

Workshop 7 – Continuation into Einstein Brief

The workshop this week was a continuation on the Einstein brief from the last workshop. This week I decided to focus solely on the A2 Poster. I chose the A2 poster first so I had a lot of room to play with ideas and develop a general theme I wanted to use. The general theme I wanted to stick with was wormholes and how they work as illustrated by my graphics.

At first I really liked the overall look I was going with, I thought it illustrated quite nicely how a wormhole worked, and gave a simplistic understanding to a complex scientific theory, however the information was too cluttered, the page didn’t have much flow and I just generally grew to dislike it. Another slight error I made with this work was the file format too, the graphics I created were a PNG and Not a vector, so the overall image quality is blurry and pretty awful.
